If you want to boost your bank account over the next few years, the single most consistent piece of career advice from Mark Cuban right now is not about which industry to enter or which stocks to buy. It is about a skill. And if you do not have it by 2030, Cuban says you will already be behind.
In a 2025 exclusive interview with Fortune, the billionaire investor and former Shark Tank star said he sees AI fluency becoming a "baseline skill like email or Excel" within five years.
That means within the window we are already in, understanding how to work with AI tools will not be a differentiator. It will be table stakes. The workers who have not developed that fluency by then will be competing on an uneven playing field against the ones who did.

The right way to think about AI at work
Cuban does not argue that AI will replace workers wholesale. In fact, he made the opposite case in a February 2026 post on X, writing that AI agents are "still like college interns that come in hungover, make mistakes, and don't take responsibility for them". The technology still lacks the real-world judgment, contextual awareness, and consistency that skilled workers provide.
His specific point is that AI is a powerful tool that delivers results only for the people who know how to wield it well.
Think of it the way you would a chef's knife. A professional chef with a sharp knife produces extraordinary results quickly. Someone who has never used one properly either avoids it altogether or produces mediocre work slowly and dangerously. The knife has not changed. What changed is the skill of the person holding it.
Cuban's version of that framing is to treat AI "like your smartest intern: ask the right questions, but always double-check the answers," he told Fortune. The value has shifted. It is no longer primarily in producing the work from scratch. It is in knowing what to ask and catching what the AI gets wrong.
AI fluency is not what most people think it means
A common misconception about AI fluency is that it requires coding, machine learning, or data science. That is not what Cuban is describing. He is describing the ability to use AI tools purposefully and critically as part of your everyday work.
That means knowing when to reach for an AI tool and when not to. It means writing a useful prompt rather than a vague one. It means reading the output with genuine critical attention, not just copying what comes back. It means understanding that AI is fast but not always right, confident-sounding but not always accurate, and useful for many things but not yet capable of replacing the judgment a skilled human brings to a complex problem.
Cuban has described AI agents as able to serve as an entrepreneur's "VP of ops, your first sales rep, your data analyst, and your legal counsel rolled into one, minus the payroll."
That is not an argument for eliminating those roles. It is an argument for every worker in those roles to understand what AI can and cannot do, so they can direct it, supervise it, and make it useful rather than letting it work unsupervised and unchecked.
"At the end of the day, AI is a multiplier," Cuban wrote. "Use it, but don't be used by it."
Why Cuban emphasizes human skills alongside AI fluency
Cuban has also been consistent about what AI fluency does not replace. In a separate interview, he listed the skills that will actually determine who comes out ahead as AI becomes standard: "Creativity, collaboration, communication skills: Those things are super important and are going to be the difference between make or break."
His argument across multiple interviews connects. AI handles the routine and the repetitive. What it cannot do is think creatively about a problem it has not seen before, build a relationship of trust with a client or colleague, communicate a nuanced idea in a way that lands with a specific audience, or take genuine accountability for an outcome. Those are human capacities, and Cuban believes they are becoming more valuable, not less, as AI absorbs the tasks that do not require them.

How to start building that skill right now
A few starting points Cuban and other practitioners consistently recommend:
- Start with tasks you already know well. Use AI to help with something you are already capable of doing yourself, so you can evaluate the output accurately. If you know the subject, you will notice when the AI is wrong.
- Ask more specific questions. Vague prompts produce generic output. The more precisely you describe what you need, what audience it is for, what constraints apply, and what you want to avoid, the more useful the result.
- Always verify before you use. Cuban's intern analogy is worth taking literally. You would not submit an intern's work to a client without reading it first. Apply the same standard to AI output.
- Pair it with communication and critical thinking. The output AI produces is raw material. Turning it into something genuinely useful still requires human judgment about whether it is accurate, appropriate, and well-suited to the actual situation.
Bottom line
AI fluency is on a trajectory to become as expected and as basic as knowing how to use email or a spreadsheet. Workers who are already building that skill will have a meaningful edge over those who are still avoiding it, and that gap will widen, not close, as the tools improve and more employers expect workers to use them.
For anyone trying to get ahead financially through their career, the clearest near-term action is to start using AI tools regularly in your actual work rather than treating them as something to figure out later.
