Starbucks Is Closing 90 Locations, Plus 250 More Just Announced (Is Yours on the List?)

In July 2025, Starbucks said it would phase out its mobile order and pickup-only format during fiscal 2026. CEO Brian Niccol estimated that roughly 80 to 90 stores used that format. Some could close, while others could be converted to traditional coffeehouses. 

The iconic coffee company is realigning its store footprint with a "Back to Starbucks" business model plan under the impression that customers prefer meaningful interactions rather than streamlined service while stretching their food and drink budget.

Here are the pickup-only locations that could close or be converted, along with what we know about the newly announced coffeehouse closures. Starbucks has not said which specific stores are affected by either move.

Starbucks said in July 2025 that it planned to phase out its mobile order and pickup-only store format during fiscal 2026. Niccol described the format as "overly transactional" and said the company wanted to offer mobile-order convenience through its traditional coffeehouses.

The roughly 80 to 90 figure referred to stores using the format, not 80 to 90 confirmed closures. Starbucks did not announce which would close and which might be converted. Mobile ordering remains available at other Starbucks coffeehouses.

On September 24, Starbucks announced that it would close approximately 250 coffeehouses across North America later this week. The company said its review identified stores where it could not consistently deliver the experience it wants for customers and employees, or where it did not see a path to acceptable financial performance.

Starbucks has not released a list of the affected addresses. This announcement is separate from its earlier decision to phase out the pickup-only format. There is no basis yet to say whether any particular store in the state-by-state list below is among the approximately 250 newly announced closures. Starbucks says it will direct customers of affected stores to nearby coffeehouses.

• Chandler: Arizona Ave. and Loop 202
• Tempe: 55th St. and Broadway
• Tucson: Speedway and N. Part Ave.

Starbucks has yet to clarify if these locations will be closed or transitioned; however, the stores in Tempe and Chandler both offer indoor and outdoor seating along with a drive-through, despite being listed as pick-up only.

• Glendale: Verdugo and Cañada

Starbucks has already closed seven locations in San Francisco over the last couple years, which some believe signals the coffee giant is quietly exiting the local market there.

• Fort Collins: Laurel and College

An additional location in Denver closed Aug. 29. Customers will no longer be able to stop by the store at 575 Lincoln St.

• Stratford: Barnum Avenue

No decisions have been made whether the location will be closed or renovated; however, there is another Starbucks in Stratford with full service.

• Atlanta: Piedmont and Auburn

Local news sources have indicated this location at 1870 Piedmont Ave. NE already closed early in September 2025.

• Miami: Biscayne and NE 3rd St.
• Talahassee: FSU Azalea Hall

Florida only has two locations that were mobile-order or pick-up only, which is relatively few compared to places like Manhattan.

• Chicago: Wrightwood and Racine
• Dickens: 2063 N. Clark

Starbucks has yet to announce which locations will be closed permanently and which will be converted; however, there are conflicting reports about the future of the Plainfield location.

It is being widely reported as closing, but, according to the building owner of the lessor to Starbucks, they will be remaining open.

• Baltimore: JHH Weinberg Building

The Towson Armory Building Starbucks actually shut down at the end of 2024, according to Towson University, which owns the building. 

• Boston: Beth Israel
• Cambridge: Lechmere
• Medford: Tufts Medford

The mobile-only locations could be closing, but customers can still place mobile orders. The only difference? They'll be picking them up from the traditional full-service stores now.

• Grand Rapids: Ionia and Oakes

Michigan has just one mobile-only pick-up location, currently located at 121 Ionia Ave. SW.

• Minneapolis: 33 S. 6th St. City Center Skyway
• Minneapolis: Nicollet and 26th St.

Two Minnesota locations could be shut down or refurbished, both of them located in Minneapolis.

• Manhattan: 40th and 8th
• Manhattan: 13th and University
• Manhattan: 42nd and Park
• Manhattan: 52nd and 7th
• Manhattan: 56th and 2nd
• Manhattan: 59th between Park and Lexington
• Manhattan: 5th Ave between 41st and 42nd
• Manhattan: 67th St and Columbus Ave.
• Manhattan: 76th and Second
• Manhattan: Broadway between 36th and 37th
• Manhattan: Carmine and Varick
• North Babylon: Deer Park Ave. and Woods Road
• New York: Pace University
• Yonkers: Yonkers and Sawyer Place

New Yorkers may be disproportionately impacted by the closure of pick-up-only locations, but mobile ordering will still be available to customers at full-service Starbucks locations.

• Charlotte: 601 Tryon Ally CLT Center
• Durham: 9th St. Duke
• Raleigh: Hillsborough and Pogue St.

In June, North Carolina had their sixth and seventh Starbucks locations unionize in Fayetteville and Chapel Hill. 

• Columbus: OSU Neil Ave. and 11th
• Hamilton: Princeton Glendale Road
• Oxford: Miami University OH Bell Tower

There are over 500 Starbucks locations in Ohio, so customers still have plenty of places to grab their cup of Joe.

• Moore: 12th St. and Moore Ave.

Starbucks is facing bigger problems than low sales from pick-up only locations.

In May 2025, a Starbucks in Oklahoma City joined a nationwide protest against the new dress code policy implemented by the coffee giant. The employees cited concerns that the company has chosen to focus on a more restrictive dress code that burdens employees with the cost and ignores real and pressing issues that need to be addressed.

• Eugene: Knight Campus

Though the location in Eugene could be closing, there are around 400 Starbucks locations in the entire state of Oregon for customers to choose from.

• Philadelphia: Springfield and Baltimore Pike
• Philadelphia: 17th and Chestnut

Pennsylvania has 459 Starbucks locations and is the fourth-largest food chain in the state. The only locations closing will be pick-up only, which allows customers to order from the app, grab their drink, and go with minimal interactions.

• Greenville: Camperdown Plaza

Starbucks recently opened a new location in Bluffton in April, so it's not all closings for the coffee giant.

Travelers at Terminal E in Houston International Airport (sometimes called George Bush International Airport) typically have three Starbucks options, though they may be closed or renovated. All three pick-up only locations are in Terminal E.

• Charlottesville: 1001 W. Main St.
• Richmond: VCU Main and Harrison

There are only two pick-up-only locations in Virginia, both in the central region. Mobile ordering will remain available; however, pick-up will have to be at full-service locations.

• Bellevue: 4th and Bellevue Way
• Redmond: Downtown Redmond
• Seattle: 1st and Denny
• Seattle: U Village N

The Starbucks at 500 A Valley Mall Parkway in East Wenatchee isn't on the list of impacted stores, but it is a pick-up only location, making the fate of the store unclear.

In August 2024, the store was closed for renovations to convert it into a pick-up only location, so it may be that the company has decided to convert it back to a full-service location again.

Starbucks is making two distinct changes: phasing out its pickup-only store format during fiscal 2026 and closing approximately 250 North American coffeehouses later in the week of September 24. It has not published a confirmed address list for the newly announced closures. Many customers don't care about uniforms or about personal interactions. Ultimately, they just want a cup of coffee at a price that doesn't require breaking out the best cash back credit cards to afford it. And, maybe a place to hang out while they drink it.
